Double the Impact – Welcoming our 2014 Partners
As we take a step back and savor our memories of last month’s record-breaking fundraising concert, we want to take a moment to introduce our 2014 nonprofit partners—yes, that’s partners, PLURAL!— Communities In Schools of Durham and Communities In Schools of Wake County. Communities In Schools (CIS) works to collaborate with local public schools, businesses, social service providers and healthcare providers within the community to provide support and empowerment to students identified as at-risk of dropping out.Founded in 1970 by a youth advocate in New York, CIS connects students and their families with academic and non-academic services in the community that will assist them in achieving a high school diploma and beyond. Since its establishment in North Carolina in 1989, the organization has continued to grow, and in 2011 it saw a graduation rate of 92 percent of monitored seniors. As the year progresses, we will continue to learn about our new partners and provide volunteer opportunities with both inspiring programs.back to top

I just want to say thanks to all of you: our friends, family, volunteers, supporters and donors. Together we raised more than $850,000 for the Band Together/Tammy Lynn Center Partnership. This does not happen by accident. When we are intentional about supporting a cause and we marry that with great music and amazing people, magic happens! This year has been nothing short of magical. We hope you continue to support Tammy Lynn Center and I invite you to join us on our new journey with Communities In Schools of Durham and Communities In Schools of Wake County. Together we will continue to raise the bar!back to top
Volunteers…We Couldn’t do it Without You!
We talk a lot about our recent event and what a success it was, raising more than $852,000 for the Band Together partnership with Tammy Lynn Center. While significant for us, in truth, that money came from much more than one event or one night. It represents a year-long partnership between our two organizations as well as heroic efforts from hundreds of our closest friends and biggest supporters in the months leading up to May 4. And although we did see amazing generosity the night of the concert from buyers in the silent auction, wine grab, the raffle and our text-to-give promotion, it was the fundraisers who worked the other 364 days who are truly our heroes. That’s why it’s appropriate to acknowledge David White, winner of this year’s Band Together Volunteer MVP award. David is not only a volunteer, but past-president and a current member of Tammy Lynn Center’s Board of Directors. And, his son, Sloan, was a recipient of services from Tammy Lynn Center. David helped envision what our fundraising goal could be, and was an essential leader in surpassing that goal. We’ve been blessed to have someone at the helm of fundraising who’s not only gifted in their ability to raise money, but an equally good manager and motivator.Last week we had handed out a number of other awards, some too silly to repeat. But, below is a list of just a few we recognized for their exceptional contribution. In the end, we are grateful for the hundreds of volunteers who made our 2013 event a smashing success.
- Co-Chair Award – Kavita Hall, Volunteer Committee
- Rookie(s) of the Year Award – Cari Swann, Volunteer Committee, and Sarah Hager, Communications Committee
- Social Butterfly Award – Kim Fenton, After Work Socials Committee
- Lunch Lady Award – Ashley McGuire, VIP Committee
- Firefly Award (Bartender Extraordinaire) – Lee Whitman, VIP Committee
- Over-the-Top Award(s) – Amanda Cheney and Brent Sprinkle, Silent Auction Committee
- TNT Award – Daniel Baum, VIP Committee (Because he’s dyn-o-mite!)
- Mission First Award – Mark Ezzell, Communications Committee
- Fred Sanford Award– Nell Barnes, Logistics (She does the most with the least!)
It’s Time for a Roadie-O
We’d be nothing without the support from all of our volunteers (we like to call them Roadies), and as we achieve great success year to year, we strive for even more. The beautiful thing about Band Together is not only helping create the final product, but being able to build relationships in the process. With our After Work Socials and other special events, the driven, caring and powerful young professionals of the Triangle can get acquainted and join forces to better our community.Want to help make the magic happen? Sign up HERE to join our volunteer list so we can keep you updated on upcoming volunteer opportunities with Communities In Schools of Durham and Communities In Schools of Wake County and additional Band Together events.
