StepUp Ministry: Real World Program
It’s widely known that the transition from childhood to adulthood is a long and arduous process. So much is expected; from finding and developing personal identity and preparing for independence, to establishing a role in the greater society. We may not often think of it, but this is a lot to accomplish in the few years between 16-21. The developers of StepUp’s Real World program recognized this and created a curriculum to address the specific needs of this age group. The program consists of 4 focus areas - communication skills, decision making, professionalism, and higher education - mirroring much of the Job and Life Skills training in the adult programs, but making adjustments for the unique challenges that young adults may face.Like the Adult programs, the Real World is a one-year commitment which includes an Individual Development Plan, weekly classes, and pairing with a mentor. Topics include money management, resume and interview skills, and time and stress management. But unique to the program are topics focused on personal identity, especially as that relates to finding the right career path, and decision making regarding sexuality and drug use. Participants are encouraged to share in open and honest discussions in a safe environment with trained volunteers and mentors. Melvin Breeden, program coordinator for the Real World, says that young adults hear the same things from familiar sources - parents, teachers, public media - all the time. “Sometimes, just hearing the same information from someone else can make all the difference.”Above all, the Real World focuses on the same goals of StepUp’s other programs - supporting and creating stability for people who are seeking to change their lives. The commitment participants make to the Real World program is sizeable, but for those who complete it, there are rewards that will last a lifetime.
“The Real World [helps] young adults by giving them an opportunity to think about and shape their future. Any success that a young adult has in the real World is driven and dictated by that young adult.” - Melvin Breeden, Real World Program Coordinator
Become a mentor for a young adult in the Real World Program, a weekly program to empower young adults to develop life-sustaining skills, make better decisions, and dream for the future. Be a friend, offer support and encouragement, help teach curriculum, and work with participants one-on-one to set measurable goals. The Real World meets every Tuesday evening, at White Memorial Church, from 6:00 to 8:15, with meals provided each week.If you are interested in volunteering at StepUp, please contact our Volunteer Coordinators, Kathleen Hofstadter, 919-781-0156 x.111 or Amy Kennemur, 919-781-0156 x.124.
