Elizabeth Levene: Spotlight on CIS Durham’s Program Director
Communities In Schools of Durham’s Program Director of five years, Elizabeth Levene, has been a long-time advocate for children and families in Durham and across North Carolina. As an expecting mother of her second child, she understands the importance of a child’s social-emotional development and need for school-readiness. In her role at CIS, Elizabeth directs evidence-based programs that have real-world outcomes in literacy, academic achievement and social-emotional readiness for over 5,000 Durham Public School students. She also leads efforts with local and statewide partners to increase the capacity and sustainability of programs for more effective outcomes with children and families.Elizabeth is a proud Durhamite, having lived Bull City since 1999. When she has time, she enjoys getting out and about with family and friends. When she leaves Durham her favorite place to go in NC is the beach.back to top

Moose Tracks
I have tons of conversations each week with great people. I always start off by asking, “How are you?” The majority typically say, “Busy!” We are all so busy, and I do not think that is going to change. We are a community on the move, and we all are working hard in all facets of life, and that is okay. However, I do want to change how we perceive our lives, so next time I ask, “How are you doing?” Your reply back is, “Happy!” I think we need to need to constantly evaluate the things that fill up the hours in our day and make sure they are making us happy. Give us a chance to show you how giving back to a great cause through the power of live music can help you find some happiness. Join me on August 15 at Lincoln Theatre for our first annual Summer Sampler.back to top
Catching up with BIG Something
Every year, we have the pleasure of discovering new talent with our “Last Band Standing” contest. Each band is driven, has their own sound and can sure draw a crowd. We love to know where these bands are now, and hear how Band Together affected their careers. We recently caught up with BIG Something, the 2012 “Last Band Standing” winner. When asked about their experience with Band Together, band member Nick MacDaniels said, “Last Band Standing was the most prestigious ‘Battle of the Bands’ that we’ve ever participated in.”The band is currently recording their next studio album, produced by Grammy nominee John Custer of Raleigh, due out this fall. The next Triangle show for BIG Something will be Oak City 7 free concert series on Thursday, August 8 in Raleigh’s City Plaza. The full blog post about BIG Something can be read here.Interested in getting your band involved with Band Together or know a great local band?
