Reflections from a First-time Volunteer

Lyle Lovett headlined the Band Together concert at Koka Booth Amphitheater. This year we welcomed a new volunteer to the Band Together family – Lizzy Lauffer, who served heroically on our Silent Auction committee and as a volunteer in VIP the night of our Main Event. Lizzy recently offered some thoughts on her first Band Together experience, and we wanted to share.

On May 4, as signs were flipped revealing the total amount raised for the 2013 Tammy Lynn Center/Band Together partnership, I took a moment to reflect on the thousands of people gathered at Koka Booth Amphitheater to enjoy live music and celebrate a shared accomplishment.  $852,722. My jaw dropped, and right there, I fell in love with Band Together.

I emailed the volunteer recruiter and was quickly thrown into the commotion of preparing for the main event only a few months away. At first, I was lost in the rush of emails that came from the silent auction committee, but was soon embraced by two remarkable individuals on the committee who guided me through. I was amazed at their work and dedication to the organization. I knew I’d found a great group.

Lyle Lovett headlined the Band Together concert at Koka Booth Amphitheater.I had no idea what was in store when I showed up to volunteer on the night of the event. I’d signed up for the first shift of VIP ticket check-in, and as I took tickets from the line already formed outside, I could faintly hear the music of Chatham County Line and applause echoing from the crowd.

After my shift, I entered the amphitheater and got a beer - my reward for volunteering. But as I walked toward the stage, the real reward came in seeing the audience that stretched across the lawn. Despite the chilly, damp weather, thousands of people had come out to support a great cause and listen to incredible music. Being a part of something so grand was truly inspiring. There was nowhere else I’d have rather been.

Although I’ve only been a volunteer for a few months, the impact from my first experience will last a lifetime. I can’t express how excited I am for this coming year’s partnership. I found Band Together to connect with people in the community, but it became much more than that. I’ve been introduced to an amazing family of volunteers and an organization that touches the hearts of so many people, including my own. For that, I’m so thankful.
