Gerod Blue : A Communities In Schools Success Story

DeAnna Miller-Wooden, CIS Wake’s Graduation Coach at Millbrook High School, first met Gerod Blue as a sophomore. He was failing, socially-isolated, never passed an End-of-Course (EOC) exam, and was considering dropping out. This put DeAnna on a mission!  She began connecting him with school and community resources, engaged him in group activities, tracked his academic progress and collaborated with his mentor, Doug Walton.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hucux2uTBQThings began to shift in Gerod’s life. He began putting forth all of his effort and lessons from the CIS program into his achievement in high school. His grades improved, he passed his EOC exams and he developed significant friendships with classmates. In June 2012, Gerod did what he couldn’t have imagined possible just two years before: he graduated! Gerod is currently attending Wake Technical Community College and working in his area of interest. He and his mother credit the CIS Wake Graduation Coach program and the dedication of his mentor for the change in Gerod’s life. Gerod is definitely one of CIS Wake’s students who has turned into a star!
