Providing access to mental health care is the focus of our 2018 Partnership with Triangle Family Services. Our fundraising goal of $1 Million will provide access to mental health services for up to 600 individuals in our community. Why is access to mental health care so important? Here are 5 reasons to consider:
1.) Last year 340 individuals, including hundreds of children, received therapy through 3,982 mental health sessions at TFS, allowing them to heal and move toward lasting stability and health.
2.) One in five adults experience a mental-health crisis, meaning up to 200,000 individuals – your friends, family, neighbors — in Wake County are affected
3.) The Wake County Jail is the largest mental health facility in our state. Sheriff Donnie Harrison confirmed that between 65-75% of those incarcerated has diagnosed mental health conditions or substance use disorders.
4.) The number of people taken to the emergency room for mental health treatment has increased from 5,352 to 12,193 over the past five years. That’s a 120% increase in just five years.
5.) TFS offers individual and family counseling by licensed clinicians, helping children and adults cope with anxiety, trauma, sexual behavior problems, depression and bipolar disorders, ADHD and adjustment orders.
“The truth is one in three people will suffer from domestic violence. As access to public mental health services decreases, the Sheriff’s Department is called on more and more to respond to violence resulting from mental health issues. Triangle Family Services responds to the call from our department on a regular basis, often in the middle of the night, to ensure that those in need get the necessary services and assistance.” – Donnie Harrison, Wake County Sheriff
