Raleigh, N.C. (April 18, 2016) – In a packed house at Lincoln Theatre last Saturday night, music fans cheered on three talented bands at Band Together’s 6th annual “Last Band Standing” event, the biggest philanthropic music competition to hit the Triangle. Appalachian “funk-grass” band Dr. Bacon won the musical face-off, taking home a $1,000 cash prize and a coveted spot opening Band Together’s Main Event, headlined by Trampled By Turtles on May 14 at Red Hat Amphitheater.
Triangle-based Band Together NC uses live music as a platform for social change. This year’s Last Band Standing event is part of the fundraising campaign to raise $1 million to benefit the 2016 Band Together/Kidznotes partnership. Kidznotes uses orchestral music training to change the life trajectory of underserved K-12 students in Raleigh and Durham. Through the partnership, Kidznotes will expand the number of participating students from 300 to 600 by the 2016-17 school year.
“We are very proud to hold this exciting, growing music event and showcase amazing talent,” said Matt Strickland, executive director of Band Together NC. “It’s even more special because it is supporting Kidznotes, and we’re able to use live music events to support the power of music in our schools and its impact on young lives.”
“All the bands gave phenomenal shows, and Dr. Bacon will be a great addition to open our May 14 event,” said Strickland. “We thank Bryan Elijah Smith & The Wild Hearts, Rebekah Todd & The Odyssey, and Dr. Bacon for their incredible performances, and we also appreciate Yarn, a crowd favorite, for closing out the night.”
The winning band was selected by a panel of three local judges: Taylor Traversari with Live Nation; Sara Waters from Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival; and Marianne Taylor with Marianne Taylor Music.
Band Together thanks Leadership Raleigh for its ongoing support of Last Band Standing. The organization also wishes to thank the generous sponsors for the event: Red Hat; Insight Global; Hayward Baker, Inc; Brasfield & Gorrie; Veredus; Jim Graves; Harris, Wiltshire and Grannis, LLP; Bella Monica; RA Jeffries; DocuSource NC; Lincoln Theatre; Robert Half; The Select Group; Spectraforce; Raleigh East Concrete Construction; and Barnhill Contracting.
